Work has recently begun on converting the "Water Cube" into the "Ice Cube". The place where the reconstruction work is taking place is Beijing (China). The reason for this is the need for a sports stand in which curling could be played at the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games. The Chinese had already announced this unusual solution. The water cube hosted the swimming competitions during the 2008 Summer Olympics and the structure gained fame for its inventive design. Once the transformation is complete, a portable ice rink with four curling lanes will be installed in the original swimming pool. A publicly accessible ice rink will be added to the south of the arena and will be used in the standard way for Olympic visitors. The water cube upgrade was presented by Yang Qiyong, director of the National Aquatics Center. At the same time, he said that a special climate monitoring system will be installed to monitor all the necessary parameters (temperature, humidity, light, etc.) that need to be set and maintained for quality curling ice. In 2022, Beijing will become the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The transformation of the swimming pool into a curling hall may be an example of the ability to see the need to adapt sports venues to their desired purpose, both from an economic, operational and organisational point of view, as well as from a marketing perspective.
